Professor Adewale Roland Tunde Solarin Profile

ADEWALE SOLARIN, a Professor of Mathematics was a Deputy Vice – Chancellor (Dec. 2004 to Dec. 2006), and a member of the Governing Council of the University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Nigeria(2000-2006); but currently the Mathematics Programme Co-ordinator in National Mathematical Centre, Abuja, Nigeria.
Adewale, with background in Statistics and a Ph. D. in Mathematics, has for 31 years taught various undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science, not only in his home university but also in many other universities, within and outside the country.
He was one of the prime movers of the inauguration of the Quality Control Society of Nigeria (QCSON) in 1990. Consequently, he became the foundation National President of the Society in 1990, a position he held till December 1994.

TRAINING AND CONSULTING EXPERIENCE

Adewale, a Quality and Productivity Improvement Consultant, had his first encounter with Quality Control in 1978 and Total Quality Management (TQM) in 1989.
Since then, he has participated in national and international conferences, seminars and workshops on Quality Control, Total Quality Management, Productivity Improvement and related topics. These were organised by organisations like, Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON); National Productivity Centre (NPC); Federal Ministry of Commerce and Tourism and Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC). His participation was in various capacities, including Facilitator, Guest Speaker, Coordinator and Convener.
Since 1991, he has been the Principal Consultant in TQM Implementations in many companies in Nigeria, including UACN Plc, which is ranked the biggest private conglomerate in Africa.
He has been Principal Facilitator to foremost consulting outfits on TQM in Nigeria to design and run workshops on topics including TQM for Managers; Training-The-Trainers in TQM; Building World-Class Customer-Oriented Culture in the Banking Industry to mention but a few.
Adewale is the Team Leader of the Inter-university Research Team on Quality Management (IRTQM). IRTQM is a university-based organisation, involved in conducting research into TQM Implementation and Development in Nigeria. IRTQM is responsible for organising annual national and international conferences on TQM in Nigeria. These activities are carried out with support from many organisations in the private sector, including Chevron Nigeria Ltd; The Document Company - H. S. Xerox; Shell Development Company; and a host of others.

He has played leading role in the design and execution of the following training-related activities:
(1) Quality and Productivity Improvement Project at Litho Factory, Bordpak Premier Packaging (BPP), Apapa ( A division of UACN Plc) (1992-1993).
(2) Total Quality Management (TQM) Implementation in Bordpak Premier Packaging (BPP), Apapa (1994-1996).
(3) Total Quality Management (TQM) Implementation in Eagle Package Printing, Otta (1993-1995).
(4) TQM for Managers Training Workshop for Lion of Africa Insurance PLC;
(5) Training-The-Trainers in TQM for First Bank PLC Training Managers – Organised by Rockleads Limited (1994-1995).
(6) Building World-Class Customer-Oriented Culture in the Banking Industry Workshop for First Bank Nig PLC Managers(1994-1995).
(7) ISO-9002 Certification Programme for Vita Foam Nig. PLC (1999-2000)

PUBLICATIONS

Adewale wrote an M. Sc. thesis in Statistics and a Ph. D. thesis in Mathematics. He has supervised students’ theses (B. Sc., M. Sc., Ph. D., PGD, MBA, and MBF) in topics in Mathematics, Statistics, Quality Control, Computer Science, and Business Management in Nigeria and abroad.
He has published more than 30 papers in statistics and mathematics in internationally reputable journals. He has written more than 20 papers on Total Quality Management and related topics for journals, seminars, workshops and conferences. Adewale had written a number of computer programs needed for his research.

EXTERNAL EXAMINATION SERVICES

Adewale has served as external examiner to Universities in Nigeria and abroad for undergraduate and postgraduate programme including examination of Ph.D. theses. He was an external examiner in the Department of Mathematics, University of Dar-Es-Salaam, Dar-Es-Salaam, Tanzania (2004-2006) and Department of Mathematics, Makerere University, Kampala, Uganda (2006-2008).

ACCREDITATION EXERCISES:

He is a member of the Science accreditation team of the National Universities Commission for academic programmes. He is also a member of the NUC team for accreditation of private Universities.

AWARDS AND RECOGNITIONS

Adewale had his undergraduate studies with Federal Government Scholarship. His M. Sc. and Ph. D. degrees were undertaken with the University of Ife scholarship. He bagged the first Ph. D. (Mathematics) awarded by Obafemi Awolowo University, Nigeria.
He has enjoyed a number of international scholarships and fellowships including:
Italian Foreign Affairs Fellowships (1980, 1981, 1983);
International mathematical Union (IMU) - ICM-90 Scholar, Kyoto, Japan.
Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD) - German Academic Exchange Award - for Senior Academics - 1996.
In 1993, Adewale received a letter of commendation from the Head of State of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, for drawing a programme for achieving National Excellence using TQM principles and philosophy.
In 1999, he delivered the 9th University of Agriculture Abeokuta Inaugural Lecture titled: TOTAL QUALITY – A MATHEMATICAL PANACEA FOR NATIONAL PRODUCTIVITY IMPROVEMENT.
