ACTIVITIES OF THE PROGRAMME

A.        Workshops

The workshops are designed to enable teachers at all levels to:

  • Handle effectively Mathematics contents which hitherto they found difficult to handle.
  • Become proficient in the use of innovative methods and strategies in the presentation of school mathematics topics.
  • Acquire skills and competencies in mathematics teaching generally.

B   SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS AND INCENTIVE SCHEMES

The aim of the Incentive Scheme is to encourage the pupils, students, teachers and schools in the study of the Mathematical Sciences and to popularize the Mathematical Sciences in Schools.  Under the Incentive Scheme we:

  1. Organize National Competitive Examinations in Mathematics for Pupils and Students.  This helps to sensitizes and popularizes the study of the subject.
  2. Organize Award Ceremonies for the winning students, Teachers and Schools at the State level.  The best ten students from each State is presented with some Incentive Awards and all the students that scored 60% and books are presented with certificate of Merits.  The teachers and schools are also presented with various awards including certificates and book prizes.
  3. Organize National Quiz Competitions for the best students from each State and FCT of the Federation at Abuja.  The winning schools are presented with computer sets, books prizes and other Awards.  These have help to generate the interest of students in the study of the Mathematical Sciences.

All schools and States now look out for these competitions on an yearly basis and thereby help to popularize the study of the Mathematical Sciences.

C.        PRODUCTION AND PUBLICATION OF RESOURCE MATERIALS

The departments are engaged in writing text books for pupils, students and teachers for the improvement of the teething and learning of the Mathematical Sciences.

The publications include:

  1. Mathematics Teaching Modules for Primary 1 – 6
  2. Mathematics Teaching Modules for JSS I – JSS 3
  3. Mathematics Teaching Modules for SSI – SSS 3
  4. Mathematical Games for Primary Schools
  5. Mathematical Games for Secondary Schools
  6. Workbooks for JSS I – JSS 3
  7. Workbooks for SS I – SSS 3
  8. NMC Mathematics textbooks for Primary 1 – 6
  9. NMC Mathematics textbooks for JSS I – JSS 3
  10. Teaching of Difficult Concepts in Mathematics for Secondary Schools

REVIEW OF INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

Teaching modules games, etc

During the year the Department reviewed some of our Publications.  In particular, the students texts, Mathematical Games and Teaching Modules were reviewed.

PUBLICATION AND PRINTING OF WORKSHOPS PROCEEDINGS AND MANUAL

The Department printed manual for the workshop for the retraining of mathematics teachers for the six geopolitical zone of the federation.

E.        PRODUCTION OF TEACHING AIDS

The departments enhanced the production and distribution of Mathematical Kits is designed to concretize mathematics concepts.  Mathematical Kits help to simplify concepts in mathematics and thereby generate interest of students in mathematics.  In 2006, Mathematical Kits were distributed to over 370 Primary Schools in the Federation.  Also many State Governments and Schools are now placing orders for the kits.   These are being appreciated by students, teachers and schools.

Other Activities of the School of Mathematical Sciences Education 2013

  1. Review of Mathematics Teaching Modules. The School reviewed the   Mathematics Teaching Modules to reflect the new topics added to the Mathematics Curriculum for Senior Secondary Schools. The Modules being reviewed are for SS1-SS3. These are ready for type setting.
