By the law establishing the Centre, it is subject to the authority of two bodies namely:
- The Governing Council whose responsibility it is to “exercise general control and superintendence of the policy, finances and property of the Centre, including its public relations”.
The composition of the Council is as follows:
- a Chairman;
- one representative of the Federal Ministry of Education;
- one representative of the National Universities Commission;
- one representative of the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology;
- one representative of the Nigerian Academy of Science;
- two representatives of the Nigerian Universities appointed in rotation for two years;
- one representative of the Polytechnic;
- one representative of the College of Education;
- three members to represent professional and other interests in mathematical sciences, computer science, statistics and theoretical physics; and
- the Director General of the Centre.
The Governing Council was dissolved by the present Administration and is yet to be reconstituted.
- The Academic Board is invested with responsibility to
“formulate and continuously evaluate the academic programme of the Centre, and to perform such other functions as are tradition to such bodies as the Governing Council may, from time to time direct” Specifically, the Board is in charge of the organization and control of lectures, symposia, workshops, conferences, etc. in the subject areas of mathematics, computer science, theoretical physics, mathematical sciences education and statistics.
The composition of the Academic Board is as follows:
- The Director General
- The Deputy Director General
- The Librarian to the Centre
- Four representatives drawn in rotation from among the Universities in Nigeria in a discipline of the mathematical sciences; and
- Five other persons, for the time being holding such appointment in the staff of the Centre, as the Director General of the Centre may, with the approval of the Council, specify.
- The Director General and other Staff of the Centre
The Director General is the Chief Executive and Chief Academic Officer of the Centre. Each of the Seven Academic Programmes of the Centre is headed by a Programme Coordinator who is a senior and experienced scientist of professorial rank and who is also responsible for the organization of the academic activities in the Department.
The permanent staff of the Centre is shown in the organizational structure attached herewith. In addition, there are the visiting and part time staff who come to deliver lectures or carry out research at the Centre for designated periods, some may be as short as one month. There also other supporting staff but of lower cadre.
